G4 Media hired Rainfall Films to produce a live action parody trailer, combining Thelma & Louise with James Cameron's Avatar. The trailer, starring Olivia Munn and Eva Amurri, premiered on G4tv on December 28th, 2009.
G4 approached Rainfall Films in late November of 2009 with the high concept of pairing Thelma & Louise with Avatar. The trailer would star Olivia Munn (Iron Man 2) and Eva Amurri (Californication), and be aired on their network during the year-end Olivia '09 special. The turnaround time would be incredibly tight: only three weeks from concept to delivery.
Prep began immediately. While G4 began work on the costumes, props and makeup, Rainfall initiated R&D on how the environments would be created. With no time or budget to build sets, the vast majority of the locations would have to be virtual. To recreate the look of James Cameron's planet Pandora, the program Vue was implemented for its diverse and highly customizable environment-creation engine. The interior "sets" were modeled in Cinema 4D and 3DS Max.
The shoot took place over two days. The first day was on the set of G4's Attack of the Show, where a modest green screen was set up. For the second, and more complex day, the production moved to a larger sound stage in Santa Monica. The pacing had to be fast: over 50 setups were shot in a 10-hour period. The Red camera was used for its sharp 4k resolution, since the short post-production time required excellent, painless green screen keying.
The trailer was cut in three quick days, and the visual effect work began instantly. The Rainfall team maintained an efficient workflow process, with in-progress shots being shared via a secure server. Final Cut Pro's iChat Theater was used to screen editorial progress to G4. After installing a new Mac to the render farm, Cinema 4D and Vue's net render capabilities were instrumental in quickly completing complex shots. In the end, 87 VFX shots were created within a 10 day period.
Rainfall would like to thank their cast, crew and G4 for an incredibly exciting and fun experience. We hope you enjoy the result.
